Board of Adjustments considers a larger elephant

During its July 31, 2023 meeting, the Forney Board of Adjustments met and considered a variance for a new sign at 200 Kroger Drive (Kaufman CAD property 178374).

  • Denied a variance for a new sign at 200 Kroger Drive (Kaufman CAD property 178374).
        Mr. Dixon said this is for a wall sign for The Learning Experience - the elephant symbol is shown over 5 ft tall, ordinance only allows 4 ft.  Staff believes the request does not meet 3 of the 4 requirements for a variance.
        Mr. Reese went through the 4 items.  Ms. Rice says she doesn't believe they meet any.  Mr Kirk said there is no physical reason for it - they could stay in the 4 ft limit.  There was discussion about which way the sign faces.
        Sign company rep. spoke, stating the client wants the proportional logo, to be consistent with marketing.  Ms. Rice asked if all the other locations have this size - yes.  There was discussion about the overall sign size on the building.  Ms. Kennedy asked if all other locations have the 5 ft logo - applicant did not confirm, only that they wanted to have it proportional to the lettering.
        There was no motion to approve the variance.  Ms. Rice moved for denial - that was approved.
