Forney Animal Shelter cmte gets update on new facility

During its September 26, 2016 meeting, the Forney Animal Shelter Advisor Committee met and:

  • Mr. Morgan briefed the members. He said there has been a big increase in adoptions, and usually only sick animals are euthanized. Rodney said there were 4 animals this morning, now have 3 avail for adoption. All incoming animals receive several vaccinations. Mr. Morgan said council has provided funds for vaccinations. Have applied to ASPCA to become a transfer partner, waiting for an on-site inspection.
      Mr. Morgan said new shelter completion date is April, had a fence problem. Contingency funds must be used to relocate power poles.
      The current shelter will remain open with temporary power, should stay at full capacity until new one opens. Dog capacity will jump from 8 to 24.
      Ms. Patton asked if intake animals were spayed and neutered - no. Puppies are de-wormed on intake.
      Volunteers asked about spay & neuter and adoption policy. Mr. Morgan said nothing was in place yet. Another said when sick animals come in, they don't have funds for emergency vet fees.
      There was discussion about online visibility of the shelter, possibly setting up a non-profit to allow donations. There was discussion about the grand opening of the new shelter, Mr. Morgan said there were plans to have an event.
